I replaced mine and still have the old one from my 51,000 mile 1994 car. It is in great shape (nothing cracked or broken) just has some solar damage to the paint. The problem with refinishing it, is that there is no way to protect the screens unless you yank them out. They are heat welded on to the part and it is unclear what shape they will be in once forcefully detached. Can't really mask the holes uness you could cut the exact oval shape of the holes with a machine on to adhesive tape. In any case buying a new one and replacing it was the only feasable solution I came up with.
